SOTERIA engages with EC Expert Group on Road Infrastructure Safety

As the lead for developing policy recommendations, SOTERIA’s partner CORTE has established connections with a consortium conducting a study for the European Commission on infrastructure safety for vulnerable road users (VRUs). This study will offer guidance on designing “forgiving roadsides,” “self-explaining and self-enforcing roads,” and establishing quality standards for road infrastructure aimed to enhance, VRU safety. The study, which began in April 2024, is scheduled to conclude in March 2026 with a final report. Representatives from SOTERIA met with consortium implementing the study in September 2024 to explore pathways for information sharing and potential synergies.

Further to this meeting, CORTE was invited to present SOTERIA to Sub-group 3 (“Forgiving roadsides, self-explaining and self-enforcing roads”) of the European Commission’s Expert Group on Road Infrastructure Safety (EGRIS), where CORTE participates as an observer. EGRIS members were introduced to SOTERIA’s objectives, the participatory process adopted for stakeholder engagement in innovation co-creation, and the scope of its four Living Labs. As the SOTERIA team continues to consolidate lessons learned and develop policy recommendations, the consortium remains committed to exploring synergies that encourage the uptake of SOTERIA’s outcomes through ongoing impact creation activities.
